Well ... (Part 24 of the Drabble Series)

Rating:                    GA
Characters:                Elim Garak, Julian Bashir, wish Jadzia,
Pairing/s:                 None
Notes:                     None

Set During: Season 1 Episode 16 “If Wishes Were Horses”

Garak entered his shop quickly, but didn’t turn on the lights. He watched Julian and the wish Jadzia from the privacy of darkness. If he had needed any proof of Julian’s infatuation this was the proof. He was most disturbed by how Julian’s wish behaved; he thought Julian was less shallow in his tastes.
Garak couldn’t stand to watch anymore of the pathetic display. He moved to the back room of his shop without turning on the lights. He’d spend a few minutes under the heating blanket to get warmed up; he’d open the shop later.
He wondered just how long Julian’s infatuation was going to last. Maybe he could use it to his advantage. Teasing valuable information from Julian might be easier with him distracted by a certain Trill.
Of course, Julian’s wish manifestation presented Garak with more troubling questions. Why was Julian so willing to help him? Why had the young man made such an effort to comfort him during the aphasia incident? What was Julian trying to gain from him?
Garak continued to think about these problems while he warmed up under the blanket. He had assumed at the time it was because Julian was interested in him. The way he’d reacted during their first meeting suggested that he was attracted to Garak on a subconscious level. The way he’d jumped when his shoulder was touched, Garak would always remember that moment fondly. He was certain that Julian was interested, but not yet ready to realize the interest.
But, his wish would seem to indicate otherwise. The young man was completely at the mercy of his hormonal attraction to Jadzia. You’d think he was an adolescent. Damn, Jadzia complicated matters.
What were the possibilities? Julian could still be interest in him, but it seemed unlikely. And, if he wasn’t then there was the possibility that he was trying to use him. But, how? And, to what ends? The third possibility was that Julian really wanted to be his friend.
Garak pondered that possibility for a moment. He decided that it was the least likely of all the possibilities. No one wanted simply to be his friend. They all sought some type of gain from him.
But, what could Julian have gained by staying by him while he died? Garak pushed the thought away again. There was no way that this young Starfleet officer was simply looking for a friend. No way.
Garak felt about as warm as possible given the environmental settings. He pushed all the thoughts away for the time being. He’d open his shop and focus on making a living, even if it was banal.

General comments and constructive criticism welcome. Feel free to comment.

I acknowledge that Elim Garak, Julian Bashir, Cardassia, etc. are the property of either Paramount or CBS, not entirely sure which due to the changes in 2006. The story is however mine, and done solely for entertainment purposes.
