A Day In (Part 26 of the Drabble Series)

Rating:                    AC for A
Characters:                Elim Garak
Pairing/s:                 None
Notes:                     Drinking, Depression

Set During: Season 1 Episode 17 “The Forsaken”

It had been common knowledge for the past week that a group of Federation Ambassadors would be touring the station. Garak had decided that it would be prudent to keep a low profile during the visit. However, he wasn’t about to pass up such a good opportunity to gain useful information. It was unfortunate that Julian had been assigned as the ambassadors’ liaison officer. Garak was sure that he could have gained plenty of information from the dear Doctor.
Instead Garak had opted to not open the shop and remain in his quarters. He sat behind the desk pouring over the computer readouts. He’d managed to hack into the system, but it had taken over an hour to covertly disable all of constable Odo’s security protocols; the man was really quite talented. Unfortunately, he’d found nothing of use so far.
It was amazing how easy it was to hack into three of the ambassadors’ journals; the Vulcan’s had been a pleasant challenge. Unfortunately, the journals had been filled with useless and often pity information. Just as he was beginning to find so slightly interesting technical, if not ticket to Cardassia, information from the Vulcan’s journal the computer started malfunctioning.
Garak was just beginning to realize that the main station’s computer must be on the frits when the lights dimmed. His first thought was, finally the light levels are appropriately dimmed. He decided that there was no point in fighting with the computer. He wasn’t about to fix the problem, and it didn’t seem there was anything useful to find anyway.
Garak stood up and stretched. He hadn’t realized how long it had been since he sat down in front of the computer. He walked over to the replicator and was about to order rokassa juice when he remembered the bottle of kanar he had on the bookshelf.
He might as well indulge. He wasn’t going anywhere today. Garak retrieved the bottle and an empty glass. It had been a quite some time since he had enjoyed a good glass of kanar. He poured a glass and reflected that it was going to be more difficult than he thought to gain information that would get him home.
He downed the glass of kanar in one go. Why hadn’t he just wished himself back to Cardassia with the adoration of those in power to boot? He poured another glass and downed it quickly.
It seemed colder in his quarters than usual. He vaguely wondered if it was the systems malfunctions or his morose mood. It didn’t really matter. He decided to crawl into bed with his kanar. He’d feel much better under the warm blankets.

…

It wasn’t until the a few days later that Garak heard about Julian’s heroics during the fire. He felt at once proud and angry with the dear Doctor. His abilities and quick thinking were finally beginning to show through. But, what had the man been thinking to put his self in danger like that?
Garak tried very hard to convince himself that it was because Julian was his best chance at a ticket back to Cardassia that he reacted so strongly to the news. He wasn’t becoming attached to the young, naïve, and beautiful man. He didn’t have friends. He couldn’t afford them, not before his exile and definitely not now.

Elim Dax (Preview)

This is a preview of a story I'm currently writing. I'll post the Drudgery Bit for it once I'm ready to post more than a preview. The story is currently at 6000 words. I'm just showing this small portion as a preview to make up for the lack of Drabbles. I've gotten rather engrossed in this story to the detriment of the Drabble Series.

Rating: AC for A
Note: Deals with the topic of death.

Julian had just finished his autopsy report on Jadzia’s death when the computer informed him that the Dax symbiont was destabilizing. He rushed into the back surgery room where Dax was awaiting transport back to Trill. Julian looked over the readouts; it wasn’t good. If he didn’t have Dax in a host in the next three hours the symbiont would be dead.
“Computer, how many non-human life forms are on the station?” he started to pace around the room.
“There are eight hundred and seventy-two non-human life forms on the station at this time.”
“Computer, exclude Vulcan, Romulan, Klingon, and Bajoran life forms. Also, exclude Odo. Now, how many life forms are left?” Julian was racking his brain to think of anyone on the station that might be able to accept the symbiont temporarily.
“One hundred and three life forms meet that criteria.”
“Of those eliminate any that are known to be incapable of joining with a Trill symbiont. How many are left?” Julian really hoped that the answer wasn’t zero.
            “Fifteen.”
Julian sighed. “Are any of those fifteen known to be compatible with a Trill Symbiont?”
“There are no records on file of any of the species represented ever joining with a Trill symbiont.”
“What species are represented by the fifteen possible candidates?” Julian leaned against the computer console before him.
“There are nine Ferengi, three Bolians, two Benzites, and one Cardassian.”
“We can rule out the Benzites due to their need to consume nitrogen in large quantities. We can also rule out the Bolians on account of their biochemical makeup. That leaves us with Ferengi or the one Cardassian on the station.” Julian quickly pulled up files on both the Ferengi and Cardassian body.
As he looked over the information available, it became apparent that the Ferengi body would be incapable of holding the symbiont. There just wasn’t enough room. Julian closed out the file on Ferengi and began to study everything he had on Cardassian physiology.
After thirty minutes of studying, Julian could find no evidence to suggest that Garak would be incapable of carrying the Dax symbiont. “Computer, put in a voice transmission to Captain Sisko.”
            “Sisko here.”
“I’d like you to come to the infirmary right away.” Julian didn’t feel like discussing this over a communications channel.
“Is it absolutely necessary, Doctor?” Sisko sounded exhausted.
“I’m afraid so, Captain. It’s about the Dax symbiont.” Julian was feeling tired as well; he replicated a raktajino, double sweet and double strong.
“I’ll be there shortly. Sisko out.”

Rumors (Part 17 of the Drabble Series)

Rating: MC

Set After: Season 1 Episodes 12 & 13 “The Vortex” & “Battle Lines”

Garak had been hearing strange rumors relating to the Gamma Quadrant of late. He knew better than to believe even half of them, but he had a few reliable sources. If he picked through their exaggerated stories carefully enough then he could surmise what had been happening on a general level.
Morn had claimed that one of Odo’s cousins had been found in the Gamma Quadrant. It was obvious exaggeration. Garak managed to discover that a prisoner had presented Odo with a key made of some type of metamorphic crystalline organic material. Julian had examined it for him.
Quark had something to do with the whole affair, but it wasn’t entirely clear. Garak made a note to never underestimate the Ferengi’s abilities when it came to making contacts and finding things. Perhaps the bartender could be of use to him in some minor ways.
It was the latest rumors that really concerned Garak. It seemed clear that Kai Opaka’s had disappeared during a trip through the wormhole. Major Kira had claimed that she was answering the call of the prophets, whatever that was supposed to mean.
Garak had heard everything from her becoming a prophet herself to her being abducted by Starfleet in an effort to undermine the Bajoran government. It seemed most likely that she had died in the accident that had occurred.
He wasn’t really all that concerned by the event itself. What did worry him was the instability that the loss of Kai Opaka was likely to cause. His position here was precarious enough. Major civil unrest could make it untenable.
The other thing that concerned him was the dear Doctor. He had been part of the mission when the Kai disappeared. Whatever happened seemed to have rattled him. Garak was surprised by his desire to alleviate the man’s concerns. He would have to keep a check on not only the destabilization of Bajor, but also his own emotions. Either could cause him considerable problems.

It's a Living (Part 14 of the Drabble Series)

Ratings: MC

“I assure you, sir. The pants are to the exact specifications that you gave me.” Garak was using his most polite, and most insincere customer pleasing smile.
“They are not. I couldn’t fit into these if my life depended on it.” The Bajoran was irascible.
Garak looked the man up and down slowly. He rather agreed with the portly Bajoran. It was clear that he’d been given improper measurements.
“If sir would allow me, I can measure you myself and make the proper adjustments to the garment.” Garak didn’t think that the ploy would work.
It was clear that the man wasn’t interested in the clothing at all. He was here to torment the Cardassian tailor. Garak wondered if it was really worth opening the shop some days, like this one.
“I’m not interested in having this garment altered. It should have been right the first time. It’s clear to me that you are an incapable tailor. It’s a wonder anyone patron’s your shop. I want my money back.” He threw the garment on the ground.
“Sir, my contract clearly states that any special orders are nonrefundable.” Garak sighed as he picked up the garment.
“It’s clear that you did shoddy work, and I expect to be repaid in full. It’s not my fault you can’t follow simple instructions.” The man made an attempt to physically intimidate Garak.
“I followed your instructions to the letter, sir.” Garak took a deep calming breath. “Now, I’m willing to take your measurements myself, and alter the garment accordingly. At no cost to you, might I add.”
“That is not acceptable. I want my money back. If you don’t give me a refund now I’ll lodge a formal complaint with the station security and see you in front of the magistrate.” The man smiled maliciously.
The Bajoran clearly thought that he had Garak pinned. Was surprised by Garak’s continued smile and lightness. Garak knew better.
“Feel free, sir.” He started to usher the baffled man out of his shop. “The security office is right over there.”
The man actually headed off in the direction of Odo’s office. Garak smiled genuinely as he locked up the shop and turned on the closed sign; he’d spend the rest of the day working in his back room, away from customers. Too bad the Bajoran didn’t know Odo’s reputation better.
He’d get no-where with the claim. Odo didn’t care that Garak was Cardassian; he cared about order and the rule of law. And, to top it all off, the idiot had left the very expensive garment with Garak. He’d be able to re-sale the unclaimed item and triple his profit.
Garak moved towards the back of his shop in a suddenly much better mood. There was a lovely garment that he’d just finished designing. He could start making the outfit and have it hanging on a mannequin in the shop window by this evening. It would look quite lovely there.

Preoccupations (Part 7 of the Drabble Series)

Ratings: MC, MHC

Set During: Season 1 Episode 4 “A Man Alone”

Garak made a point to watch the dear Doctor after their little adventure together. He was not quite surprised that the man hadn’t attempted to make contact with him. Under normal circumstances he was sure the doctor would have come to the shop days ago. But, he was very preoccupied of late.
Garak really didn’t blame the man. If it weren’t for more attractive diversions, Garak looked across the Promenade at golden figure, he would have been interested as well. Jadzia Dax was a catch, the wisdom and knowledge of lifetimes and a quick wit all wrapped up in such a beautiful package. And, she brought her own keen intellect and indomitable passion for life. At least the man had good tastes.
The man spent nearly all his time working or pursuing her. Garak didn’t mind at the moment. It allowed him to observe and learn.
It had been interesting to watch from a distance as he solved the murder case. He was better at his job than many realized. He’d been excited by the triumph, discovering the clone, realizing what it meant, and proving Odo’s innocents.
For his part, Garak was busy re-establishing ties and a clientele. It was a trying matter, but would be well worth the effort. He instantly had a few clients, Jabara and others that had gotten to ‘know’ him during the end of the Occupation. Of course, that was very few people. His winning personality was slowly bringing others to his shop, even a few Starfleet officers.
Yes, the doctor would be coming to him soon enough. He looked forward to the moment. He was sure the man would prove to be an entertaining companion. He left the Replimat shortly after the subject of his thoughts re-enter the Infirmary.
